White Paper

A white paper has come to refer to an authoritative report or guide that is used by businesses as a marketing or sales tool.  They generally are used to address specific issues, educate readers and assist the reader in making a decision.  For example, they may focus on the benefits of particular technologies, establish thought leadership, make a business case, or to educate customers.

A November 2009 study conducted by Eccolo Media, entitled "The 2009 B2B Technology Collateral Survey,” showed that white papers were considered the most influential form of business collateral:

Last year, 68 percent of survey respondents told us they'd read at least one white paper in the last six months. This year we saw that number increase to 77 percent, with the vast majority of respondents (84 percent) rating white papers as moderately to extremely influential when making final purchasing decisions.
